Correct me if I’m wrong, but 29 years on Earth makes me a grown ass woman, right?
I feel like it does, but my mom feels differently… AS ALWAYS.
So yeah, here I am knocking on the 30’s door, feeling grown AF and trying to think about all the life lessons, trials, and tribulations that have led me to this day. I also can’t help but think about how blessed I am to have made it this far, when I know for a fact that many people did not.
During the year leading up to this 29th birthday, I’ve spent my time teaching, inspiring, and imparting my 20-something year old wisdom to others in hopes that they will avoid the bigger mistakes, marinate in the moments that matter most, and become the best version of themselves.
With almost 30 countries under my belt, a dozen or so jobs, a few career paths, marriage, entrepreneurship, financial independence, a place to call home, and countless pivots, I feel I know a thing or two about life and how to make the most of it.
I’m here to teach, even on my damn birthday! So, I’ve brought you 29 life lessons I learned from 29 years on Earth.
The story has not been all sunshine and rainbows and I don’t claim to have all the answers, but I’m about to give you what I wish I’d had a decade ago.
Life Lesson #1:
Try ALL THE THINGS! You can fail 100 times before you’ll eventually need to get your shit together.
Life Lesson #2:
Learn the difference between hard and soft skills, and constantly hone and add new skills to your repertoire throughout life.
Life Lesson #3:
Be a woman of your word and uphold the value of integrity in everything you do, because your reputation is hard to build and easy to destroy.
Life Lesson #4:
Surround yourself with ambitious, goal-oriented people and love toxic people who don’t serve you from a DISTANCE.
Life Lesson #5:
Make it a duty to regularly step outside of your comfort zone. That’s where you’ll experience magic and self-awareness.
Life Lesson #6:
Meet people where they’re at, but if they refuse to elevate with you, don’t be afraid to leave them where they’re at.
Life Lesson #7:
If “everyone” is doing something, challenge it wholeheartedly before jumping on the train to do it too.
Life Lesson #8:
Make travel an essential part of your life and force yourself into environments different from your own, because it builds character.
Life Lesson #9:
Observe your surroundings first before contributing to the environment, because there’s nothing worse than responding without all the facts.
Life Lesson #10:
When faced with a hard decision, analyze the worst-case scenario, weigh the pros and cons, and choose the path that’s going to make you better– not the one that’s going to make you comfortable.
Life Lesson #11:
Be very slow to say “yes” and quick to say “no”.
Life Lesson #12:
Developing self-awareness is a crucial part to achieving happiness, clarity, and fulfillment.
Life Lesson #13:
Water is life. Drink it like your life depends on it. (Hint: it does.)
Life Lesson #14:
Your body is a temple and the only one you get. Do everything in your power to maintain it and love it with all your heart.
Life Lesson #15:
Start every single day with gratitude, and never take for granted the fact that someone else is praying to be, do, and have what you have.
Life Lesson #16:
Treat your future as if you have complete control over how awesome it could be.
Life Lesson #17:
Figure out a way to make your money make money.
Life Lesson #18:
Give yourself permission to pivot if the path you’re on no longer serves the woman you’re striving to become.
Life Lesson #19:
Spend lavishly on the things that bring you joy and peace, and cut mercilessly on the things that don’t.
Life Lesson #20:
Be of service to those in need, but not to the detriment of your own well-being.
Life Lesson #21:
Never, ever let a man (or woman) make you abandon your ambitions.
Life Lesson #22:
Never, ever shrink yourself to make other people feel secure or confident.
Life Lesson #23:
Always treat every controversial situation as an opportunity to operate as your higher self.
Life Lesson #24:
Learn the difference between a scarcity mindset and growth mindset, and then consciously choose to operate from the growth mindset in everything you do.
Life Lesson #25:
Read, read, read!
Life Lesson #26:
Never ask a question to which you could have easily found the answer yourself.
Life Lesson #27:
Treat everyone with love, respect, and kindness until they give you a reason not to… and even then, kill them with kindness anyway.
Life Lesson #28:
Surround yourself with people who are 2,5, and 10 steps ahead of where you aspire to be. Learn from them!
Life Lesson #29:
Treat every trial, tragedy, or trauma as an opportunity to triumph!
In a nutshell…
I’m nowhere near done learning, but this is what I’ve gathered from life so far. While I’m here, I plan to enjoy the journey and help everyone around me win. I share these lessons with you so that if you haven’t already, you can begin to incorporate them into your life!
My favorite lesson is #18: Give yourself permission to pivot if the situation warrants it. It’s probably the lesson that has yielded the most dividends…that and daily gratitude of course. Which lessons will you begin to apply to your life? Inquiring minds want to know.
