As cliché as that saying may be, I’ve found it to be profoundly accurate.
Over the past 3 years, I’ve invested thousands of dollars in my personal and professional development. Some investments yielded a higher return than others, that’s just the nature of the beast.
While I don’t technically regret any investment, there are some that helped me move the needle so much in my business, I’d be remiss if I didn’t share them with you.
To be clear, I’ve made numerous great investments but the one I’m going to share today, just hit different.
I don’t make this statement lightly but:
WAIM Unlimited was the best investment decision I made last year in my business, and it’s the gift that keeps on giving.
I think it was the underlying WAIM ethos that sold it for me.
The Wandering Aimfully (WAIM) ethos is the idea that there is no one-size-fits-all solution for designing a business and life you love; there is only experimenting intentionally until you find the right answers for you.
If that’s not in perfect alignment with the overall sentiment of Miss Unconventional, I don’t know what is!
Caroline & Jason believe in wandering, exploring, and being open to the evolution of yourself and your business—while also striving to define and embody the values that aim you in the right direction. They say, “While you wander, do it AIMFULLY (not aimlessly) based on your own personal goals and your unique definition of success.”
Whew! That gives me chills every time.
Here’s a private message I sent to Jason and Caroline Zook (The Founders) at the end of 2021:
“Happy New Year Jason! Please give Caroline my love. I just wanted to hop on here to say THANK YOU! I may not be active in the Slack community, but if you remember when I first started with WAIM, I shared very specific goals with you.”
👉🏾 I wanted to have a fully-functioning website that showcased all the ways to work with me
✅ I have that now
👉🏾 I wanted to launch a Productivity Quiz with unique avatars and an email course
✅ I have that now
👉🏾 I wanted to launch an evergreen course on Teachery
✅ I have that now
👉🏾 I wanted a blog with 8-10 foundational articles like you suggested
✅ I have that now
👉🏾 I wanted to enhance the quality and increase the frequency of my content on IG
✅ I did that
👉🏾 I wanted to launch a solo-workshop style podcast
✅ I did that*
You know I’m not sharing all of this with you to brag. I have a LONG way to go in my business. I’m sharing this because I firmly believe that having you and Caroline as my Business Coaches last year gave me so much clarity, confidence, and endurance.
I can’t really believe everything I’ve been able to accomplish in such a short period of time! You both helped me lay such an amazing professional foundation. I feel on top of the world as I enter into 2022. Thank you for the way you show up and serve. I pray God blesses every single move you both make this year and beyond. Please share this with Caroline.”
I share this private message with you to give you context for why I’ve decided to be a WAIM Affiliate. It is because I believe in this program and its Founders. They have done wonders for my business and I’m still amazed by how much they OVER DELIVER, which is a core business value of mine.
I’d be remiss if I only shared my products and services when I know full well that it was investments like WAIM and others that have led to so many of my biz accomplishments.
Before I discovered WAIM Unlimited, I was STRUGGLING. I really didn’t know what to focus on and when, but the Un-Boring Business Roadmap was everything I needed and more to help me gain clarity on my next bold business move.
For those of you who’ve never heard of WAIM Unlimited, here’s an overview:
WAIM Unlimited is Caroline & Jason Zook’s comprehensive coaching program that helps online business owners learn everything they need to know to create a business that meets their individual goals—without burning out in the process.
For this enrollment period, March 21 – April 5, WAIM Unlimited will include:
At no additional cost!
You read that right! Once you’ve paid off your membership, you have access to everything they create for the LIFETIME of the membership. I was in awe when I saw this. I felt like I got my money’s worth with the first 2-hour training I watched!
This is hard because I love so much about this program/membership, but here are a few trainings, templates, and articles that have had a PROFOUND effect on my business:
From organizing my daily life and business systems to implementing ethical, sleaze-free marketing strategies, these trainings have equipped me with the tools I need to hit the ground running as a professional and profitable entrepreneur.
I joined WAIM in April of 2021, but had access to all the trainings they had done before and will continue to have access to every new training long after my last payment post. In a world that’s favoring the “Limited Time Access” model I found this to be refreshing and extremely valuable.
I’d invested in other business courses prior to WAIM Unlimited, but if I recall, none of them focused on the life-changing magic of slowing down and building at your own pace, prioritizing work-life harmony.
Most of what we see today is “Learn to hit 6-Figs in 3 Days!” Haha, I’m exaggerating but you get my point. The courses inside of WAIM Unlimited teach you how to build the business of your dreams in a chronological, strategic way that leaves the burnout and overwhelm at the proverbial door.
While the articles are available to anyone outside of the program, I wanted to include them because they are a prime example of how much Caroline and Jason love and care about the people they serve and the content they create. When the free content alone can provide so much value, you can’t help but be intrigued by the paid offers.
I remember reading a few of their articles and thinking to myself, “This right here is truly an UNCONVENTIONAL brand if I ever saw one.” Not to mention, there’s a catalogue of over 200 articles in the WAIM Unlimited Library, carefully categorized and curated for whatever you need to focus on in life and business.
The ideal customer for WAIM Unlimited is as follows:
✅ They own their own online business
✅ They are currently making some revenue with their business
✅ They want to grow their business, but want to do it intentionally (not just in it to hustle-to-the-bone to get rich, but want to live a spacious, balanced life along the way)
✅ They see themselves as creative in some way and are willing to do the work it takes to reach their goals
✅ They know it can feel lonely to own your own business so they’re looking for a community and group of like-minded people
✅ They value being inclusive, kind, curious, open, honest, and willing to ask for help
A person is NOT a good fit for WAIM’s products if…
❌ They don’t have a business at all
❌ They are looking for overnight success or silver bullets
❌ They think they can outsource every part of their business
❌ They think “passive income” means you can set it and forget it
❌ They want the easy way out and don’t want to do work or take action
❌ They want to make “6 figs” with no reason as to why
❌ Their business is affiliated with an MLM company
❌ They are only focused on growth (more customers, more money, etc)
❌ They are not okay with business owners talking about or supporting social justice initiatives promoting equality on behalf of marginalized groups
❌ They aren’t willing to laugh or have fun with biz
❌ They don’t like emojis 🤷🏻♂️
If you meet the criteria, I encourage you to enroll using my special affiliate link here.

Do you have that one friend or colleague that seems to be running circles around everyone?
Every time you turn around they’ve hit yet another major milestone.
Wrote a book.
Discovered a cure for cancer.
Increased their revenue by 30%.
I’m being dramatic, but you get the picture.
This is about that friend who has their shit together.
They properly plan.
They have boundaries.
They get the RIGHT shit done at the RIGHT time for the RIGHT reasons.
Do you want to be able to say the same for yourself?
Try adopting some of their habits…
I’m not saying adopt their routines or schedules. We all are unique so the way you do what you do can and should be different, BUT you can adopt some of their daily principles and habits:
Well, I’m sorry to disappoint, but this is not what I was going to say. I don’t believe in a blanket statement, one-size-fits-all platitudes.
Whether this places them in the 5AM club is neither here nor there. The key here is they are not rolling out of bed and directly into someone else’s agenda.
They are giving themselves the time and space to fill up their cup (in whichever way works for them) before diving into other people’s emergencies and demands.
They’re not afraid or apologetic about being selfish with the first hour of their day.
2. Choosing to meditate, exercise, and eat at the most appropriate time for them.
I know quite a few productive people (including myself) who skip breakfast altogether. Again, not recommending you do the same. I’m simply pointing out that most Productive Bosses eat when their body is ready to eat, exercise at the time of day best for their rhythms, and reserves meditation for a time that’s most beneficial for them.
Point being, they do all of these things, yes, but it doesn’t always happen at the top of every day and that’s okay. Your productive friends understand the power of making sure their routines match their natural rhythms.
3. Scheduling their “to-do” items directly inside their calendars.
Many of your productive friends are not deciding the day of what their needle-moving tasks are going to be. They have likely set goals and targets for the month, broken those goals down into actionable tasks, and placed those tasks inside their calendar.
If they do review the day of or the night before, it’s likely to refresh their memory or move things around if any part of their schedule has shifted since setting the goals.
In other words, they knew what needed to be done before the day it was due arrived.
4. Breaking when necessary, but remaining in a flow state when the situation warrants it.
Maybe you’ve heard of the famous Pomodoro Technique which encourages people to work for 25 minutes and break for 5 minutes consecutively for 4 rounds, then take an extended 15 to 20-minute break and start again.
I’m going to let you in on a little secret…come closer….Your productive friends do not do this shit. They’d likely never get anything done if they did this.
Instead, most of them would rather remain in a flow state for an hour to 90 minutes and then take a break. I have yet to meet a high performing, productive boss who interrupts their flow state every 20 to 25 minutes. It’s nonsense.
5. Completing their most needle-moving task first which is not always the “hardest” task Brian Tracy coined the phrase “Eat That Frog” in his book of the same title.
He was saying when you wake up in the morning, you should complete your hardest, most difficult task first.
Let me just say this, I LOVE Brian. He’s my mentor! I’ve learned so much from him, but I respectfully disagree and I think your productive friends will too.
While it is important to complete your most important, needle-moving tasks first, those tasks are not ALWAYS the hardest or most difficult. In fact, I’ve experienced the opposite to be true. It’s the shallow tasks (the tasks outside of our zone of genius) that prove to be the hardest.
Our needle-moving tasks (the tasks WITHIN our zone of genius) are not only most important, but also easier than the shallow tasks. To respectfully disagree even further, the needle-moving, zone of genius tasks shouldn’t necessarily be completed first thing in the morning.
Instead, those tasks (which require lots of brain power and focus) should be completed at the time of day when your energy is at its peak! If that’s first thing in the morning for you, great! But, that’s not always the case for your productive friends. We’re all different.
I say all this to say, ignore all the cliché productivity advice you hear and start paying attention to the actions and principles your productive friends live by.
If you want to properly plan, establish boundaries, and get the RIGHT things done, at the RIGHT time, for the RIGHT reasons, in the RIGHT way for YOU, I highly recommend enrolling in CONQUER Your Chaos Crash Course where I walk you through the 7 steps to ruthlessly reclaiming your most precious commodities: Time, Energy, & Attention.
You’re one 8-week course away from becoming a Productive Boss just like your productive friends.
“Throw the whole business away, sis!”
Yup, that’s what I yell at Taneeka, my Design Strategist & Personal Assistant, at least once a month, two to three weeks in. Like, I just can’t!
If you’re an entrepreneur reading this, can you relate? It’s like clockwork! The feeling just takes over my mind, body, and spirit and at that moment I’m ready to abandon all ambitions, pack my bags, and relocate to the sunny beaches of Malta with my husband and sip pina coladas, while working on my tan.
For a moment, I am READY and no one can tell me otherwise.
Of course, Taneeka or my husband sees it coming, as they do every month, and at this point they hit me with the monotone response like,
“Oh, so it’s that time of the month again, huh?”
Annoyed! I’m yelling at them how serious I am. I’d go so far as to offer Teeke a severance package. LMAO. I’m so friggin dramatic. She just calls in Ilya and he brings a mimosa or glass wine and says,
“Baby, you can’t quit. You have women who need your help.”
In his innocent, loving, supportive voice, and gradually I come back to reality remembering my big WHY and my purpose for this season of life.
The feeling lingers a little while longer until I read something, hear something, or think of something, that sparks my creative senses and then I’m back at it, grinding away. Whew! The drama of it all!
A rollercoaster is literally the best way to describe it. Had I known it would be this damn hard, I probably would have never embarked on the journey in the first place, but here I am.
When things are good, they’re really, really good!
☻ Ideas are flowing, content is endless, gems are dropped and recorded, lives are changing, and life feels GRAND.
☻ A client will send me a message profusely thanking me for a breakthrough.
☻ I’ll hear one sentence on a business podcast I’m listening to that sends me into a creative frenzy.
☻ I’ll receive a DM from someone who’s been following me “silently” revealing that my consistency and content have changed the trajectory of their life.
☻ I’ll have a conversation with a friend where they’ll affirm that I am walking in my purpose.
☻ I’ll have a post that gets crazy engagement reaffirming that I’m not speaking to an empty auditorium.
☻ A podcast host will express excitement to have me on their show.
☻ My coach will express how inspired she is by my work ethic and ambition.
When things are bad, they’re really, really bad!
☹ Ideas are non-existent, content is at a stalemate, and gems are as rare as an Afghan Ruby in a South Dakota Jewelry store.
☹ My brain freezes and it feels like I’ve lost every creative atom in my body. I can barely articulate a complete intelligent thought.
☹ New clients seem out of reach, organization and routines fall by the wayside.
☹ Social media accounts feel like a wasteland and everyone is seemingly thriving EXCEPT me.
☹ The conversations with friends cease because I don’t want them to see or hear me all bent out of shape like this. After all, how would that look? The Productivity and Lifestyle Design Strategist (and gratitude enthusiast) are having a gloomy day! Oh poor her.
☹ Then my coach comes along granting me permission to rest and chill, I take it, yet beat myself up for it, completely negating any good the break could have done.
Yup….when it’s down, it’s really down…
But nothing bad lasts forever either…
I’ve made peace with the inevitable ebs and flow of this entrepreneurial journey.
If I feel down, I feel down! I honor that feeling. If I feel creative and productive, I honor that too. I take full advantage of my “Ups” so when the “Downs” come knocking I don’t feel as bad about marinating in my temporary misery for a day or two. I know not to sit in my setback too long though. There’s work to do, lives to change, mouths to feed. I honor every part of the process.
Screw the toxic positivity we have been conditioned to spew in lieu of actually feeling anything negative.
Nope, I’m human, not a robot. The difference is I give myself the space to have an occasional dip, but I pick myself right back up a day or two later. I am fully aware that this is not the case for some and it may take others a lot longer to ease themselves out of a setback, but this is MY process and I honor it.
My hope is that by sharing my experience, you’ll grant yourself permission to embrace your journey in its entirety: the good, the bad, and the ugly. I hope you’ll do so UNAPOLOGETICALLY. We are living, breathing, feeling beings. Lean into it and allow it to free you. This is why I highly recommend joining mastermind communities. It can be your safe space to share the not-so-pretty aspects of the entrepreneurial journey with people who get it on a visceral level.
Raise your proverbial hand if you have ever purchased and read a non-fiction book, invested in and completed a course, or hired a coach to hone a skill.?
Did you know that every time you did that, you were investing in your personal and professional development?
Even if you’ve watched an instructional YouTube video or read an informative blog post, that’s still considered a significant investment in your overall personal and professional growth.
Some would even say that the level of your commitment to growing personally and professionally can be directly correlated to your level of success.
I, for example, have a scary obsession with self-help books, goal-setting, vision boarding, and skill-building. That obsession has led to the lifestyle I lead today where I am a financially independent, business owner and published author with a 6-figure net worth.
Now, do you understand why I’m obsessed? The two are definitely connected. It’s my firm belief that my results will never exceed the amount of effort I put in and that fact drives me to go all in.
“Your results will never exceed the effort you put in.”
I couldn’t have gotten to where I am today without reading hundreds of personal finance, business, and personal development books, taking courses that hone my hard and soft skills, giving myself permission to pivot when the situation called for it and hiring coaches who force me to nourish an abundance mindset.
Last year, I spent $20,000.00 on my personal and professional development, and this year, I’m on track to double that!
I know that you’re thinking…
You’re thinking, that’s an astronomical amount of money to spend on some books, courses, and coaching, right?
Well, here’s the thing:
IT’S ALL RELATIVE. My coach spent triple that last year on her own personal and professional growth journey. The actual dollar amount is not the point I’m trying to drive home.
It’s not so much about the amount of money , but the time and commitment that goes along with it. There’s a different kind of energy surrounding the tools and resources you pay for, and I wanted to make sure I got my money’s worth. As a result, I always learned and applied something that made a huge impact on my life, and that’s when I realized the key to EXPONENTIAL GROWTH.
I’m in no way saying you have to go out and spend an entire bag on courses or books. To be quite honest with you, all the knowledge you can find for free on the internet alone could make you a millionaire, but the hunting and gathering of information don’t always appeal to people. The amount of time it takes to then sift, organize, and categorize the information makes it even less appealing. Tack on the fact that you have to EXECUTE on the lessons learned is usually what makes most people abandon ship.
So, free or paid, we still have to decide on the actions we’ll take once the knowledge is acquired.
There’s no “one size fits all” personal and professional development journey, but I’d like to share the ways I’m going about mine in hopes that it will inspire you to begin paving your own path to individual achievement.
There’s no one size fits all personal and professional development journey, but here are seven ways I invested in my journey.
I joined a mastermind of like-minded, bold, goal-oriented, women of color who are committed to helping me succeed in business and in my personal life.
Robert Kiyosoki always to choose your teachers wisely and he is referring to who you choose as a coach, mentor, or anyone you seek advice from.
I chose my Mastermind coach Gloria Atanmo, because the way she conducts her business, the integrity she has when it comes to building her community resonates with me and it’s what I aspire to.
This mastermind was made up of 7 bosses, hellbent on making an impact and income with their businesses. Together (as Napoleon Hill intended) we came up with the best business idea, techniques, and offers. We constantly bounced ideas off each other and cultivated a safe space and sounding board to present all of our big, hairy, audacious goals. It was magic.
I hired two Miss Unconventional employees as well as multiple contractors who were experts in their field.
I stopped being “No HELP Halle” and started leveraging the power of other people’s zones of genius!
Hands down the best decision I ever made. I made a vow to myself to only work smart and relieve myself of the tasks that don’t exactly bring me joy or eat up my time.
The most successful people in the world outsource most of the work to run their business because they understand the importance of using their brainpower to perform the tasks that only they can do.
This mindset shift allowed me to keep the main thing the main thing and build my trust in others. I’m still a little bit of a control freak, but I least channel my energy towards what I should be focusing on.
I enrolled in an Accelerator program designed to teach me how to package and sell a signature, premium offer.
Was the program expensive?
Yes, but think about how much more expensive it would be for me to lack clarity on who I’m speaking to in my business and what they really need.
Without that clarity, I could end spending thousands of dollars either targeting the wrong audience or worst creating a product or service that my audience doesn’t want.
While I didn’t design my signature offer while I was in the course, I did refer back to the content of this course when I was ready to craft my signature offer.
It helped me design an amazing learning experience for my clients and this course can now be repurposed into so many other offers. This investment was definitely worth it.
I hired a personal fitness trainer to help me gain control over my weight and health.
I’ve faced a hard truth; I’m not “skinny minny” anymore. In fact, those days are long gone. It was either spend a little less than $2,000 for a 3-month program with Ariana Stowe Fitness and take back control over my body and my health or spend 5 times that amount getting more plastic surgery and unnecessarily exposing my body to risks.
This is it.
The only body I get in this life. If I don’t respect it and take care of it now, I won’t be around long enough to reap the benefits of all this self-help!
I’ve always had the personality type where I need to be held accountable to someone else in order to achieve goals, ESPECIALLY fitness-related goals.
With the help of a trainer, I was able to change my eating habits and drop 7-9 lbs. in a 12 week period! The power of accountability is UN-friggin-matched!
I read well over 50 books on personal finances, self-help, mindset, and manifestation.
Books have been the heartbeat of my success up to this point. Some books were free, some were a few bucks, but they all had at least one priceless piece of wisdom inside that made the price seem like a steal.
Ramit Sethi always says to never ever hesitate to buy a book. That should never be something you think about cutting from the budget and I wholeheartedly agree.
I can’t continuously drop thousands of dollars to work with all of these brilliant minds, so I dive deep into their books instead. So much of what I’ve learned come directly from the minds of people who aren’t even alive anymore.
I like to think I keep them “alive” by living the sentiments they preached in their timeless books.
I purchased multiple courses to learn things like marketing, content planning, email list building, writing etc.
Some courses are phenomenal and well-designed while others are less impressive. I’m happy to report that regardless of the quality, I’ve always been able to find at least one powerful lesson in every course I’ve invested in.
It’s all about perspective. Let’s face it, we don’t need to get a degree for every single topic we want to learn.
There are courses that adequately and thoroughly teach the fundamentals of sales and marketing, writing, and graphic design.
They teach exactly what I need to learn, fluff excluded, in the shortest amount of time, and guess what, I don’t have to go thousands of dollars into debt to learn!
As long as online education companies like Udemy, Coursera, and Teachable exist, I don’t think you can pay me to go back to a brick-and-mortar school.
I attended in-person and virtual conferences with topics related to self-help, business, entrepreneurship, social media marketing and so much more.
The energy in these rooms alone was enough to sustain my momentum weeks after I left! There’s nothing like an in-person LIVE workshop experience where people are elevating and pouring into each other.
Listen. I hear you and I’m not suggesting you invest that kind of money if you don’t have it.
What I do suggest is that you start with something.
Read books, sign up for free courses that’ll teach you a hard or soft skill that you need to learn to get better at your job or business.
Find a mentor that you can learn from and offer to take them to lunch or something. Don’t be afraid to volunteer under someone who is doing something that you eventually want to do.
The goal here is to take your personal and professional growth more seriously because no one can do it for you.
All of these investments and experiences combined have allowed me to become the Profitable and Productive Boss I am today.
I’ve also seen the best and “worst” of the personal development industry. This has helped me ensure that my offers are impactful, valuable, and worthwhile for my clients.
